On June 1st, Kenya marked 63 years of self-governance with Madaraka Day celebrations across the country. In Kibera, Nairobi, Human Needs Project chose to mark the occasion not with words, but with action.

Taking Action for a Cleaner Kibera

Together with the West Family Youth Group, HNP organized a community cleanup initiative in Kibera. Volunteers cleared blocked drains, removed waste from streets, and helped restore public spaces that serve hundreds of families every day.

Access to a clean environment is a basic human need. In dense urban communities like Kibera, maintaining clean public spaces requires consistent effort and community cooperation. This cleanup was a direct expression of that commitment.

Investing in Kibera's Youth

The cleanup also created a meaningful opportunity for local young people to contribute to their community in a positive and practical way.

"Your support means a lot to us because you are also preventing us from engaging in crime." – Colins Oduor, Vice Chair of West Family Youth Group

When young people are given constructive outlets and community support, the impact goes beyond cleaner streets. It builds confidence, belonging, and a safer neighbourhood for everyone.

Building a Healthier Community Together

At Human Needs Project, community health means more than medical care. It means clean water, clean streets, safe spaces, and opportunities for young people to thrive. The Madaraka Day cleanup in Kibera was one expression of that broader mission.

Thank you to everyone whose support made this day possible!
