Last week we were thrilled to welcome a group of 30 delegates from California — including the Bay Area Council, UC Davis and CalSTA— to the Human Needs Project in Kibera! Among the visitors were Toks Omishakin, California’s Secretary of Transportation, Derick Brown, Alex Foard, Alana Sanchez, John Cumbers, and Aditya Ramji.

The day began with African dancing and a delicious lunch from our very own Jirani Cafe & Kitchen, followed by a tour of our clean water points, hydroponic farming projects, and other services.

This visit marked the first step in building a new partnership between California and Africa, with a focus on Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana. The delegation also joined Kenyan leaders for a panel on advancing this collaboration, and we were honored to meet with President Ruto to discuss how informal settlements can become engines of growth.

We’re excited to be at the heart of these conversations and will keep you posted as this partnership develops!

With gratitude,
