Hello HNP Family,

The year has started on a strong and productive note for our team. Byrones Khainga, Director of Technical Services, recently traveled to China alongside Billclinton Achar from the Livelihood Impact Fund (LIF), our partner in expanding access to safe lighting in Kibera.

After two successful phases of the Light Up Kibera project, more than two miles of solar lights now illuminate safer pathways and support economic activity throughout the community. We are now preparing to launch Phase 3, adding another mile of solar lighting in collaboration with LIF.

Watch this short video to see how Light Up Kibera is transforming everyday life.

Building two miles of solar lighting taught us invaluable lessons about what it takes to create infrastructure that truly lasts. As we prepare to expand Light Up Kibera with Phase 3, this next phase will be even more durable, efficient, and cost-effective.

That’s why Byrones traveled to China — to refine the technical durability and efficiency of the lighting systems. Working directly with engineers, he helped fine-tune the specifications to ensure the lights are easier to maintain and built to serve the community for the long term.

“We are thinking beyond installation. Our focus is on long term performance, maintenance, and making sure this technology serves the community for years to come.” Byrones Khainga Shichenyi, Director of Technical Services

Our goal is ambitious and clear: we are aiming to illuminate all of Kibera and ensure its streets are safer for thousands of residents. Join us!

With gratitude,

Human Needs Project Team
